In order to provide pastoral care for the people of God in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Archbishop Aymond has made the following appointment: Rev. Emanuel Tanu, S.V.D ., as pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in New Orleans, effective September 1, 2017.

Archbishop Hannan High School Student Council hosted the annual New Student Orientation Aug. 8 in the gym for all incoming Hawks for the 2017-18 school year. Students played games, learned the do’s and don’ts of Hannan, toured the campus, met the administration, faculty and staff and also were paired up with their Big Hawk which is a senior student who will be a mentor for the school year.

Boys could be spotted “playing Mass” behind makeshift altars, while girls tended to take on the roles of the Catholic sisters who educated them.

The 27th Annual Greater New Orleans Rosary Congress, celebrating the centennial of Our Lady of Fatima, will be held Oct. 7-13 at St. Rita Church in Harahan, 7100 Jefferson Highway. The rosary congress, dedicated to the intention of life, reparation and peace in the city, nation and world, has been held in the Archdiocese of New Orleans since 1990.

This moment in human history has been labeled the “age of distraction.” I’ve come across the phrase in a number of articles and even recent events. At a conference for higher education teaching methods, there was a panel titled “Teaching in the Age of Distraction.” It’s not exactly a new term, and it’s not something that comes as a surprise.

On Sept. 12, the non-profit Joe and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation awarded service-learning grants totaling $270,000 to 62 area schools, among them 14 Catholic elementary and nine Catholic high schools.
