For Gerard Schoen III, community relations director of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, All Saints’ Day – Nov. 1 – is the Super Bowl Sunday of the New Orleans funeral business. It’s not just that our city named its professional football team, founded on Nov. 1, 1966, in honor of the “saints,” a nickname that Archbishop Philip Hannan famously endorsed at the time as non-sacrilegious before cautioning with a knowing wink: “But I must tell you, most of the saints were martyrs.” Nov. 1 is special in New Orleans cemetery circles because it draws thousands back to the tomb – visiting, praying in front of and sprucing up a place that in this topographically challenged city often is a small, white, granite home with a view.

All S aints’ Day is approaching. What does the church teach about the Nov. 1 holy day? From what we can tell historically, All Saints’ Day was first observed in the early 4th century as a way of honoring all the martyrs of the early church.

Why has difficulty become an excuse? Within the past week, I read three different articles about the difficulty of the Catholic Church and following the faith. Three articles expressed the challenges of living a faith that teaches obedience, love and mercy, while also teaching suffering, sacrifice and redemption.

But when Stevens began going through the drawings and cards of support sent by New Orleans Catholic school students to their hurricane-weary peers in the Diocese of Beaumont, Texas, Stevens “lost it” – in a good way.

The Academy of the Sacred Heart (ASH) seniors spent Sept. 18-19 participating in their final class retreat. It’s a spiritual tradition at Sacred Heart during upper school years that provides an opportunity for students to reflect, bond and pray in a setting – away from school – free from outside distractions or school commitments.

After a three-year hiatus, the Saints are once again relevant. The spike in quality of play comes after the club’s best draft since 2006. In that draft, the headliner was running back Reggie Bush. But long after Bush departed, the Saints were getting outstanding play from guard Jahri Evans and a pair of seventh-round picks, wide receiver Marques Colston and offensive tackle Zach Strief.
