The Gospel shows us Jesus in prayer the night before his death. “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me,” he says. “Still, not my will but yours be done.” Clearly, he knew what kind of suffering he was about to undergo. Just as clearly, he recoiled at the prospect of it.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) – The life of a young person and the vocation to which God calls each one is “holy ground” that pastors and parents must respect, nurture and encourage, Pope Francis wrote in a new apostolic exhortation.

The vocation of marriage promises great things: unity, companionship, adventure, beauty, deep intimacy, joy, gratitude. But, are our brains prepared to handle it these days?

The Serra Clubs of New Orleans honored 79 boys and girls as Altar Servers of the Year for 2019 with a Mass and banquet April 2 at St. Rita Church, New Orleans. Individual parishes selected the Altar Servers of the Year from their respective communities. Archbishop Gregory Aymond celebrated the Mass and presided at the awards presentation.

In the pre-Google map days, Mike Orkus was doing what any veteran Catholic school educator does in fulfilling the “other duties” section of his job description. Following afternoon band practice at Holy Cross School in the Lower 9th Ward, Orkus would take off on a nomadic, 50-mile route, from Chalmette to Kenner, to drop off 40 middle-school students to their homes.

The Brother Martin Crusaders for Life and Justice Team hosted the second annual “In Their Shoes” kickball tournament March 21 to raise money for organizations that, through service and compassion, help the community.

The 2019-20 school year may be Frank Monica’s last as athletic director and head football coach at St. Charles Catholic High School, but he will leave the athletic program he has overseen for the last 21 years in a memorable way.

Academy of Our Lady recently inducted several students in its Science National Honor Society. The society encourages participation in and recognition of scientific and intellectual thought to advance the students’ knowledge of classical and modern sciences, to communicate with the scientific community, to aid the civic community with its comprehension of science, and to encourage students to participate in community service and, in turn, encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all mankind.

On March 28, the Louisiana Knights of Columbus awarded winners of its Catholic Citizenship Essay Program.

Academy of Our Lady’s bowling team was undefeated with a 4 and 0 record defeating Mount Carmel Academy, Crescent City Christian School, Albany High School and Salmen High School after a third of its season competing in the Louisiana Invitational Baker Tournament held in Baton Rouge  The team took on nine of the top schools in the state in a seven game match which led to the girls winning the tournament.

At the recent Grandparents Mass and lunch for juniors at Archbishop Rummel High School, members of the Schweitzer family assembled for the morning’s events.  They are (left) junior Nathan Schweitzer and his grandparents George Schweitzer, Mary Schweitzer and Daniel Hynes.  Throughout the school year, the school’s Parent-Booster organization hosts grandparents for each of the school’s five grade levels.
